Sharing lifelong careers and a fluid relationship to genre, Boys Noize and Skream know how sounds move through time, and their collaborative track “Trip” explodes in a hologram of club music past, present and future. A trip can describe a linear journey with a beginning and end or an acid-induced animistic hallucination, but this “Trip” does both as it progresses through hardcore, tribal and IDM inflected house.

Opening with 12-bit breakbeats and a distant M1 organ, a 4/4 kick sets the pace through crushed metal congas and swirling vocals, soaking in the worldbuilding pools of classic Orbital or 808 State. But like a hypnotist’s finger snap, the word “trip” dissipates this dream, and the euphoric chords of a stuttering lead rev the track’s engine straight off the quantized rails. It drops with an expansive house backbeat that propels the melodic energy outward, electrified air punctuated by the diva stab recursively sampled through countless twelve inches.

For “Trip,” Boys Noize and Skream draw from a palette of deep dance archetypes, richly rendering lo-fi samples with immersive clarity, and disrupting the throwback model with a distinctly futuristic, tempo-breaking hook. It’s an anthem that - in the basements, warehouses and fields - crystalizes time into a single elated moment, all points in a constellation, all hands towards the stars.
