Boys Noize's track "Affection" exemplifies the two sides reflected on his new LP "+/-," pairing ominous techno sonics and a classic electro broken beat with the satin-smooth melancholy of RnB singer Abra's vocals. It was a club track perfect for a late night drive - or perhaps the other way around - and while "Affection" was rinsed plenty online and on stage, the one thing missing was a warm breeze.
"Affection" does feel like a summer song, and as the world warms once again so will Boys Noize and Abra's track with a series of upcoming remixes. Kicking it off proper is two versions from the global heavyweight Solomun himself. Solomun and Boys Noize built a friendship around a shared appreciation of both house and techno, and a willingness to embrace the melodic side of the latter. Melodic techno is indeed the treatment Solomun lends "Affection," changing it's stop-start rhythm to a pummelling 4x4 ridden by a sparse, aggressive bassline and the glitchy ghosts of Abra's original vocals.
Both the main and the dub mix do a lot in their 5 minute runtime, with the former keeping Abra's earworm hook over slow attack analogue pads in the first breakdown. But the big payoff comes with the second, as violins join the building melodies into an oldskool crescendo of piano stabs and breakbeats. "Affection" deserves a real festival season, and Solomun's remixes guarantee its endurance. With more remixes to come, Boys Noize and Abra's "Affection" will spend 2022 in the sun.
